Web 2.0 is still something of a confusing term, with so many different definitions out there as people define it. This naturally can lead to some confusion. O'Reilly Media, an American company has been a leader in the development of book publishing via Web of the Internet was in its infancy, came with the term in a 2003 meeting. Tim O'Reilly and Dale Dougherty, the founders of the company coined the term.

You can find a definition Web 2.0 technology on Tim O'Reilly's blog, but most will be more confused than before reading. O'Reilly has taken these five definition page and put it in (something simpler language):

"Web 2.0 is the network as platform, covering all connected devices, Web 2.0 applications are what make most of the intrinsic advantages of this platform, the distribution of software as a continually updated service that gets better the more people using, consuming and remixing data from multiple sources, including individual users, while its own data and services in a form that allows remixing by others, creating network effects through an "architecture of participation", and beyond the page metaphor of Web 1.0 to provide experiences user.

The advances made in information technology in the last 25 years are amazing. From DOS to portable devices today, Web 2.0 is just another step in the same way, one that promises to make the web a more interactive and more fun to visit. The transition from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0 can compare with this – with the Web the way it is now, we are like spectators at a football match. In Web 2.0, which will be active participants, as if we one of the teams playing the game.

What are the differences between the two? On the one hand, Web 2.0 will be different, with bright colors on a white background rounded sources everywhere a readable format is expected to be the norm. Tahoma Arial and Times New Roman replace rounded and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) will be more used to maintain websites more simplified.

The functionality of the Web 2.0 will be different. MySpace, Twitter and the like are a look into the future, with the interaction between the user and the site as possible. The Web will continue to gather people to interact and communicate.

Social bookmarking, and networking will be an important part of Web 2.0. Yahoo Answers is a good example, with people having to ask questions about anything, with users earning points for their responses.

Blogging is something that is often thought in connection with the Web 2.0. Like a journal, blogging allows people to write about any thing they like, with the difference that now anyone can read it. A blog can keep private golf, but most bloggers prefer to share their thoughts.

The exchange of information among Web users in general is a big part of what is Web 2.0. Article Writing has become a popular activity, with people using websites to promote or provide information to the general public.

Flickr and YouTube have ushered in an era of picture and video sharing with the possible interaction between the advertiser and the viewer.

All this of course is only a hint of things to come. As we see an increasing number of websites move towards Web 2.0 standards, is used for the Internet, we have not even thought of yet. And who knows what Web 3.0 will bring ….
